This past summer (before Hurricane Ike), we went to the beautiful city of Galveston for a few days of vacation. At the beach, my daughter, Tiffany and I went swimming in the Gulf while Claudia, as usual, sat on the beach reading a book. We had fun body-surfing and jumping the waves. But with the undercurrents, we found ourselves drifting from our original spot. In the water, it's impossible to tell. But by looking at a fixed object on the beach (in this case, Claudia), we were able to swim against the current and get back near where she was sitting. This happened over and over, because when you are drifting, it's easy not to notice.
It seems to me that our nation is drifting and many people no longer notice. We are drifting away from our Christian roots. We are drifting away from the biblical foundation upon which our Founding Fathers based our system of government and societal norms. We are drifting morally and spiritually, and many people haven't noticed. Even many Christians are caught up in the modern current and are drifting away from what the Bible clearly teaches.
It's easy to drift. That's why we must have a fixed object upon which to focus. That fixed object must not be the economy, a president, or a poll. It must be the Word of God. Anything other than that will cause us to drift. And the scary thing is, we won't even notice.
